Ramgarhia Girls College, Miller Ganj, Ludhiana

College Profile

Establishment and Growth of Ramgarhia Girls College, Ludhiana

On the sacred occasion of the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, with the vision and dedication of the great philanthropist Baba Gurmukh Singh Ji, the decision to establish Ramgarhia Educational Council (Regd.) Ludhiana was taken. This initiative marked a significant milestone in the spread of higher education for girls.

Understanding the changing needs of society, the college has continuously introduced new courses, subjects, teaching methodologies, modern equipment, and better facilities. Under the leadership of S. Ranjodh Singh Ji, the current president, the college has become one of the most prestigious institutions in Punjab.

Ludhiana, known as the ‘Manchester of Punjab,’ is an industrial hub, and the college is centrally located in Miller Ganj. Before 1969, there was no institution providing higher education in this area. Girls from Miller Ganj and nearby villages had to discontinue their studies due to the lack of a college. The existing colleges in the city were far away, and parents were hesitant to send their daughters for higher education.

To address this educational gap, the founders and management established this college, initially offering only a B.A. degree with limited resources. Over time, student enrollment increased, leading to expansion:

  • 1985: B.Com and Honors in Punjabi & English were introduced.
  • 1991: M.A. in Music (Vocal) was started, upgrading the college to a Postgraduate Institution.
  • 1996: UGC-sponsored vocational courses in Advertising, Sales Promotion, and Sales Management were introduced.
  • 1998: A new B.Sc. program was launched.
  • 1999: With the growing demand for computers, Computer Science was introduced as an elective in B.A.
  • 2000: Fine Arts and Home Science were added.
  • 2001: Courses like B.Sc., Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA), and M.Sc. in Information Technology were introduced.
  • 2002: UGC-approved vocational courses in Computer Applications and Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE), along with an M.A. in Punjabi and a Diploma in Marketing Management, were launched.
  • 2004: Add-on courses in Gemology & Jewelry, Cosmetology, and Apparel Designing were introduced.
  • 2006: M.A. in Fine Arts and three new add-on courses in Tourism & Travel Management, Bank Management, and Web Designing were introduced.
  • 2007: B.Sc. (Medical & Non-Medical) was introduced.
  • 2008: Another unit of B.Sc. was added.
  • 2009: A second unit of B.Com was introduced.
  • 2017-18: The college received approval from Punjab University to start an M.Com program.
